Big Rapids defensively sound in win over Holton

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids boys basketball coach Kent Ingles looked at the scorebook and was amazed. Of all the numbers that could have made his eyes pop, it was the number of free throws allowed that caught his attention.

Holton was able to get to the free throw line just eight times in the contest and was a big reason why the Cardinals were able to roll to a 52-30 victory at Big Rapids High School.

Big Rapids also allowed just six offensive rebounds.

“Eight free throws means you are limiting opportunities,” Ingles said. “You let teams in games if you let them get to the free throw line.”

Ingles was concerned heading into the contest because Holton has the ability to pull off the upset. And for most of three quarters, Big Rapids struggled to get a lead to double digits.

That was until the final two minutes of the third quarter and the first three of the fourth quarter. During that time, the Cardinals went on a 14-0 run that increased their advantage from eight to 22.

“We got some turnovers that we turned into points and they probably shoot better than they did,” Ingles said.

Big Rapids was paced by Quinn Tyson, who knocked down a couple of 3-pointers early in the game to give the Cardinals an early lead. The sophomore tallied a game-high 21 points.

Nick Baldwin and Jake Daugherty each netted 10 points, while Dario Williams finished with seven points. Daugherty also grabbed eight rebounds, while Williams handed out five assists.

Big Rapids was playing without Dylan Schuberg, who was out with a sickness.

“Quinn has the ability to score some points and he can pick up the slack, but we would love to have (Schuberg) because we can do so much more with both of them in the line-up,” Ingles said.

Holton was led by Brock Kelley with 11 points and Ben Anderson grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Cardinals are in action Friday when they travel to Reed City for a key Central State Activities Association contest.
