Big Rapids takes down Grant, awaits Reed City in final

FREMONT — The Big Rapids and Reed City girls basketball teams will meet for the third time this season after both squads won its semifinal round contests Wednesday.

The Cardinals defeated Grant 56-41 in the first Class B district game at Fremont High School. The Coyotes followed suit with a win over Newaygo.

The district final is scheduled for Friday night at 7 p.m. at Fremont.

Big Rapids led 21-18 at halftime against the Tigers and increased its advantage to 34-27 at the end of the third quarter before a big fourth quarter.

The Cardinals were paced by Kendra Enszer with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Cameron Baumunk added 17 points and Taylor Leach finished with nine points.

“We really started to jell,” Big Rapids coach Jessica Haist said. “We worked the ball, we were patient and we got back into rhythm that we were out of for most of the game.”

Haist also was happy with the defensive effort the team gave.

Grant tried to work the ball into the post, but had trouble doing so.

“(Grant) tried to slow the game down, they aren’t a team that likes to shoot from the outside,” Haist said. “They wanted to pound the ball inside, but we didn’t let them do that, so yes, defensively, the kids bought into what we were doing.”

Now the Cardinals try to win their third straight district against Reed City, a squad they have beaten twice already this season.

“We will have to come ready to play,” Haist said. “Reed City is playing well, they are jelling. We need to be ready to play for 32 minutes.”
