TYLER SCHUBERG: Curries made Celebrity Harness Race special for Schubergs

The Celebrity Harness Race is an excellent fundraiser for our community. I had the privilege to represent Friends of Ferris and partake in this once in a lifetime opportunity with four other participants.

Matt Currie effectively trained each rider at his family’s farm. He gave all of the riders multiple opportunities to ride his well-trained horses. As a first-timer, I was relieved at the responsiveness of his horses. The comfort from training gave me confidence as the day of the race drew near.

On the day of the event, the Currie family gave tribute to my grandpa, Carl Schuberg. Horses and harness racing have been a large part of my family history. Carly announced horse races for 33 years and was a proud farmer who promoted the involvement of our youth in 4-H.

Pat Currie shared stories about Carly with the crowd, and he had the representatives of the Schuberg family paraded by horse drawn carriage to my grandpa’s favorite song “Shine on Harvest Moon”. Our entire family celebrated in the moment as we all sang and shared memories. Pat even played an audio recording of the last time Carl Schuberg announced a harness race.

Prior to the race, my emotions can best be described as a combination between the intensity of pregame warm-ups for a football game and the uncertainty of a bungee jump.

Meeting our horses for the first time, each driver set out on to the track for lineup. Once I was behind the starting gate, I could feel my horse pressing to be unleashed. As the starting gate pulled away, my horse “grabbed-on,” and the horse’s initial burst of speed was matched only by my adrenaline. The roar from the grandstands cheered us down the home stretch. All I could think about was my grandpa Carly saying his famous refrain “And here they all come”. Being a fourth generation participant in a harness race, I will be able to carry this special memory with me for a lifetime.

I would like to thank the Currie family for everything they have done to support our community, promote harness racing and giving the Schuberg family an opportunity to celebrate Carl Schuberg. I’m very thankful to Friends of Ferris for giving me the opportunity to participate in the Celebrity Harness Race. Finally, I would like to thank the community for their support and involvement. This may have been a once in a life time opportunity, but I have hopes to once again ride “The Mighty Oden”.
