Verlander rebounds against Orioles

Tigers’ ace puts All-Star start behind him in 4-0 win over Baltimore

BALTIMORE — It appears the All-Star break didn’t shake Justin Verlander up at all.

Five days after a horrendous one-inning, five-run start in the MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City, the Tigers ace came back on Sunday in Baltimore and threw eight shutout innings for his 10th win of the season.

Verlander (10-5) struck out eight and gave up just three hits and two walks in the Tigers’ 4-0 victory over the Orioles.

Austin Jackson led off the game with an opposite-field home run off Orioles rookie Miguel Gonzalez. Jhonny Peralta singled in Brennan Boesch an inning later to make it 2-0.

Alex Avila singled in Prince Fielder in the sixth inning, then Miguel Cabrera hit a towering solo home run to right center to round out the scoring.

Two of Baltimore’s three hits off Verlander came from the bat of Jim Thome, who also recorded a single off Jose Valverde in the ninth inning.

The Tigers improve to 46-43 on the season. Brennan Boesch is now on a seven-game hitting streak after going 2-for-5 today. He’s hitting .417 in July.

The Tigers took two of three in Baltimore and will return home to play the Angels starting today at Comerica Park.
