EDUCATION: Elks to offer two scholarships for high school seniors

BIG RAPIDS – The Big Rapids chapter of the Elks is awarding scholarships to local high school students.

The Elks will award a Most Valuable Student Scholarship and Gold Key Scholarship. The Most Valuable Student Scholarship is open to any high school senior who is a U.S. citizen. Male and female students compete separately for the award, which is based on high ACT or SAT scores. The scholarship can range from $1,000 to $15,000 a year for four years. The deadline to apply is Dec. 7.

The Gold Key Scholarship is for special needs students. The award can be up to $2,000 for four years. The deadline for apply is Nov. 2.

Application forms may be downloaded online: Most Valuable at www.elks.org and Gold Key at www.mielks.org. The completed applications may be mailed to Thomas Mackowiak, scholarship chairperson, at 13590 Seneca Parkway, Big Rapids, MI 49307.

The Elks and the Elks National Foundation are the largest providers of scholarships in the nation, after the federal government. For the 2012-13 school year, the Elks will award $2.3 million nationwide. Locally, $19,000 was awarded to students in the Big Rapids area for the 2010-11 school year.
