BIG RAPIDS — Dozens of gracious community members opened their hearts and checkbooks on Thursday to support the United Way. The Mecosta-Osceola chapter of the national organization held its 22nd annual celebrity auction at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center in Big Rapids.

They bid on items ranging from gas grills and Detroit Lions tickets to a stay at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and a surf and turn dinner for eight. But the most sought-after live auction item was a ride in the Celebrity Harness Race at the 2013 Mecosta County Agricultural Free Fair.

A group of family, friends and co-workers collectively bid $1,400 for Riverview Elementary School Principal Renee Kent to ride in the race next summer.
