Hixson released by the Saints

NEW ORLEANS — Nick Hixson sees it nothing more than a bump in the road.

The Chippewa Hills and Hillsdale College graduate was released by the New Orleans Saints earlier this week after spending the entire season on the team’s practice squad.

“I didn’t leave on bad terms and I think there’s a chance to come back at the end of the year,” Hixson said. “I’m confident, if it’s not here it will be some place else.”

Hixson said being on the practice squad is exactly like being on the roster with the exception of not dressing for the games. He took part in all of the practices, film study and weight lifting that is done through the course of the week.

Hixson also battled for a roster spot, playing in the last couple of exhibition games and being one of the last players cut before being signed to the practice squad.

In the back of his mind, Hixson knew being released was a possibility. New Orleans signed another player to the practice squad, leaving him vulnerable to being released. Hixson, however, knows he did everything possible.

“All I could do was do all I could do and I think I did that,” Hixson said. “I think I impressed some people and exceeded expectations.”

Hixson isn’t leaving out the possibility of returning to New Orleans in the near future.

“I did very well and there is definitely a good chance that there’s a future here,” he said. “It might be in a week or four weeks or at the end of the year.

“I didn’t expect this to be easy,” Hixson continued. “My name is out there and that is a big benefit.”

Being in the NFL for the past couple of months has helped Hixson realize how close he is to many of the players in the league.

“People don’t understand how hard these guys work and what they have gone through,” he said. “I have tremendous respect for all of these guys.”
