Santa comes to town

Santa Express arrives in Baldwin on Saturday

BALDWIN — Although Saturday’s gray sky and rainy weather was anything but a winter wonderland, it did not deter western Michigan communities from coming out to greet Santa Claus as he arrived by train in their hometowns.

In its seventh year, the Santa Express visited Baldwin on Saturday. Since 2006, the Marquette Rail — which operates between Grand Rapids, Ludington and Manistee — has chauffeured Santa through west Michigan bringing holiday cheer to communities along the way.

Traveling in a train that is reminiscent of a children’s book, Santa arrived in each community with Mrs. Claus, elves and other helpers. At each stop, children spoke with Santa, gave him drawings and Christmas lists, and families took pictures with the holiday icons. In addition to distributing candy canes, the Santa Express also delivered Christmas trees to several families at each stop.

Tyler Bloom came to see Santa in Baldwin. He said he asked Santa for a remote control for toys before giving Santa a present of his own.

“I gave him a note. (It said) I love him,” Bloom said.
