Fun in the sun and snow

BIG RAPIDS — With a fresh falling of more than seven inches of snow, children around the Big Rapids area enjoyed another snow day on Friday. Classes were canceled for all schools within the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District.

A group of Big Rapids High School students gathered on the lawn of Hillcrest Elementary for a snowball fight and to make snow angels.

In Paris, Kelly Cushway and his daughters spent the morning skating on a skating pond in their side yard.

Cushway began making the now 10-inch thick rink in November. It sits atop an area they use for gardening in the summer. He has made the rink nearly every year for 10 years.

“It’s a lot of work, but the girls love it,” he said. “They get a lot of exercise out there.”
