Giorgio stays active in the outdoors

BALDWIN — Joe Giorgio likes his bow and firearm hunting even though the Baldwin area resident considers it to have been a mixed season in 2012.

Giorgio, who lives north of town, said the numbers of deer in the area “depends on where you are in the county. In my area, where I hunt, it’s been thinner and thinner the last four or five years. It’s getting very noticeable. There’s pockets. One of my neighbors decided not to hunt around the house anymore. He went toward Wildwater Swamp. He and his guys got eight bucks.

“Around my house and my neighbors, some of us never saw a buck. Only one neighbor out of 10 got a buck. There were a few does taken. You can always find a doe. My immediate area, the deer hunting was poor. It depends on who you talk to.”

Giorgio won’t soon forget about 10 years ago when he shot a 10-point buck in the area.

“It wasn’t a wallhanger 10, it was a nice rack,” he said. “Three of the tines were broken.”

Giorgio does some small game hunting with a little bit of partridge and squirrels.

“Squirrels have been good,” he said. “I know around my house the rabbit population is coming back. For a few years, you were hard pressed to see a rabbit. Nowadays, you can see them running across the road.

Giorgio has been retired to the Baldwin area since 2002 and has been coming to the area since 1967.

“A long time ago when I started hunting here, when you went out hunting, if you didn’t see 15 to 20 deer a day, something was wrong,” Giorgio said. “As you get older, you figure out how things work, You talk to people and you learn things. That was no good for the deer and it was no good for the habitat. There were too many.”

Through DNR action, plus other factors such a predators…”it’s down” he said.

Giorgio turkey hunts and said the numbers are holding steady.
