Evart Schools has prospective buyer for alternative ed. building

EVART — For the second time in less than a year, Evart Public Schools has a prospective buyer for the school’s vacant alternative high school building.

At Monday’s Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously authorized Superintendent Howard Hyde to solicit bids for the sale of the building, located at 901 N. Main Street in Evart. The board also voted to waive the school’s disposition of real property policy in order to speed a possible transaction along.

“We have someone possibly interested in the alternative high school,” Hyde said. “Waiving (the disposition of real property) would cut down on timelines.”

The disposition of real property policy states that a minimum bid and timeline for bid submission must be approved for the sale of any school property. Waiving the policy allows for less strict guidelines, making the bidding and selling process easier.

“By waiving this we won’t have to wait until next month’s board meeting to move forward with the process,” Hyde said. “I’ll be the negotiator for the school district, and if I think it’s a good proposal I’ll bring it to the board for approval.”

The alternative education building was purchased for $57,560 in September of 1999. The district has since funded repairs and upgrades such as replacing siding and re-roofing the building along with adding a wooden deck.

An appraisal in 2012 showed the building’s market value being between $55,000 and $59,000.

The building has been vacant for more than one school year. Alternative education teachers and students were integrated into the high school building in the fall of 2011 to better utilize the computers for programming.

“We’ll never use that building again,” Hyde said.

An advertisement for the building will be put online and in print media soon.

In other business, Hyde informed the board that the district can have two more snow days before days have to be made up at the end of the school year. The district has used eight snow days, and has 11 hours left to use.

The next meeting of Evart School Board will be at 7 p.m. on March 11 at Evart Middle School.
