Maturen has special place for Turkey Rendezvous

BALDWIN — Jim Maturen has a special place in his heart for the 32nd annual Turkey Hunters Rendezvous and State Calling Championships which are set for March 30 at Baldwin High School and the VFW hall.

The Reed City resident is an active member of The Pere Marquette Chapter of the Michigan Wild Turkey Hunters Association, which sponsors the event, which is labeled the largest gathering of turkey hunters in the state.

Reed City’s Jim Maturen is among the event’s main organizers. He’s been with the event since its start.

“We have about the same attendance every year,” Maturen said. ”There are guys that have been coming back for more than 20 years. Everybody has a good time. Everybody knows everybody.”

The event features vendor exhibits, door prizes, calling clinics turkey shoot, gun raffle and turkey dinner.

Maturen indicated that the event is virtually the only one of its kind throughout the state. Other venues will provide calling classes, but the Baldwin event has its own uniqueness.

“It’s a combination of everything there. We have guest speakers. We have some of the best turkey hunters in the state giving classes,” Maturen said “So (the attendees) come to learn more about turkey hunting. We have the door prizes, Silent raffles and all that kind of stuff. It’s a combination of a lot of things.”

The seasons will be in April and May.

“Our turkey population was going down,”Maturen said. “It seems like last spring was a wet, cold spring but we seemed to have had a decent hatch. So I would say turkey hunting might be a little better this year than what it’s been in the last few.”
