Morley Stanwood’s Malloy advances to state final

AUBURN HILLS — Morley Stanwood’s Steven Malloy will try to make it two in a row Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Mohawk wrestler won two more matches Friday to advance to the Division 4 state final in the 189-pound weight class. The senior started Friday’s action with a 16-0 victory over Charlie Robertson of Sand Creek.

Malloy followed that up with an 11-4 win over Jonathan Zarzoza of Hart in the semifinal round.

Malloy, who captured the same weight class a year ago, but in Division 3, will go for his second straight wrestling championship against James Snider of East Jackson.


Consolation rounds will start at 8:30 a.m. with the finals scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m.

Pine River’s Kyle Nixon won his first match in the 140-pound weight class in Division 4, knocking off David McNealy of Bangor. But Nixon dropped his semifinal match to Grass Lake’s Chad Decker, 4-3.

Larry Kissinger of Pine River took a pair of victories at 145 pounds in Division 4. He first kocked off Andy Waterman of Constantine by fall. Kissinger then defeated Brandon Losinski of Bronson, 12-7.

The Bucks’ Cason Rawson took a pair of victories at 152 pounds. Rawson defeated Mauricio Diaz-Reyes of Elkton Pigeon Port Laker, 12-5 and Chance Wegner of Burton Bentley by fall. Teammate Adam Langworthy also won twice, defeating Dakota Keenoy of Addison, 8-2, before winning by fall over Jacob Rehn at 171 pounds.

Chippewa Hills’ Zach King went 1-1 on the day in the Division 3 112-pound weight class. The junior fell to Logan Irey of Whitehall by a 11-5 count before defeating Kolten Radaz of Freeland, 7-0.

Big Rapids’ Sam Miller went 1-1 on the day to end the tournament. He began with a fall over Avery Osentoski of Chesea at the 145 pound weight class in Division 2. Miller then picked up his second loss of the tourney, dropping a 3-2 decision to Hastings’ Jason Slaughter.

The Warriors’ Johnny Lynch dropped both of his matches Friday, falling to Matt Santos of Saginaw Swan Valley 2-0 and to Midland Bullock Creek’s Nick Torres 8-1 at 119 pounds in Division 3.

Chippewa Hills’ Jason Peacock and Cole Thielen also dropped a pair of matches Friday. Peacock fell to Tobias Barnes of Romulus Summit Academy North, 14-7 and to Shane Cooper of Jackson Lumen Christi, 11-9, in overtime at 152 pounds.

Thielen fell to Gage Hutchison of Buchanan by fall at 215 pounds. Thielen then also lost by pin to Brandon Campbell of Otsego.

Reed City’s Adam Kehr fell in his matches by identical 6-2 scores, losing to John Weldon of Comstock Park and to Jeff Mucha of Buchanan.

Dropping their second match of the tournament included Big Rapids’ Nate Weckesser, who fell to Mohamed Aljabaly of Coldwater by forfeit in the Division 2 119-pound weight class.

The Cardinals’ Kyle Carter also dropped his second match, losing by fall to Auburn Hills Avondale’s Dillon Brancheau at 171 pounds.

In Division 3, Chippewa Hills’ Richie Ostrander fell 5-0 to David Melendez of Berrien Springs at 130 pounds.

The Warriors’ Joe Coleman dropped his match to Todd Noblin of Vassar, 7-1 at 130 pounds; Kevin Briscoe fell by tech fall to Sam McLean of Saginaw Swan Valley at 135 pounds.

In Division 4, Pine River’s Tony Moore lost his second match to Niles Brandywine’s Jesse Lochmondy 9-4 at 103 pounds. Justin Seeman dropped a 3-0 decision at 160 pounds to Colon’s Jesse Binkley.

Maverick Martin of Pine River fell twice, losing to Aaron Bauman of New Lothrop 8-0 before falling by pin to Darren Decker of Carson City in the 152 pound weight class.
