Three members of Chippewa Hills team earn first-team CSAA honors

REMUS — The Central State Activities Association (CSAA) has announced its All-League selections for baseball this season, and there’s plenty of local players who made the cut.

Just like they did during the regular season where they secured a share of their sixth-straight CSAA title, the Chippewa Hills Warriors came out on top with six players being selected for recognition.

Jake Tarbell, Ty Schafer and Hunter Conley were named first-team selections while Devin Esch and Tyler Kelsey made the second team and Hayden Denslow was an honorable mention.

“It’s important for my guys to get on the team because they earned it,” Chippewa Hills coach Ben Wright said. “I’m thankful the other coaches recognized that our players are exciting to watch and that they put a lot of work into what they do.”

With a program rich in tradition, Wright said even after losing all-conference players year after year, the Warriors are able to reload with talent because of the example set by the players who have helped build the program up.

“When these kids we have now were growing up, they saw the work the older guys were putting in,” he said. “They see that and they want to be the next great players for our program.”

Despite finishing in the middle of the pack in the CSAA, Big Rapids had five representatives on the list.

Sterling Brinker and Jack Weisenburger were the two first-team selections for the Cardinals, with Josh Batenburg being named to the second team and Shawn Heroor and Mack Green earning honorable mention distinction.

For Big Rapids coach Ben Oleson, getting his three seniors, Batenburg, Heroor and Green on the All-CSAA list was something he was very happy about.

“It’s nice when all three of our seniors can make the team,” he said. “For finishing in the middle of the pack this season, I’m happy with the selections we had. It’s always a nice thing to add all-conference honors to a players’ achievements, especially for the seniors.”

The Morley Stanwood Mohawks followed closely with four total selections, with Andy Molitor making the first team, Chase Huntey getting on the second team and Tim Cairnduff and Mike Carey earning honorable mentions.

“I’m pretty pleased with our selections,” Morley Stanwood coach Josh Bull said. “Our guys that were selected represent our school and our community very well. I think we deserved the selections we received.”

Despite finishing toward the bottom of the CSAA standings, Reed City was able to get a total of three selections.

Sean Woodside made the cut for the second team while Ryan Willis and Ray Phenix were named honorable mentions.

“I was happy with the selection process,” Reed City coach Scott Shankel said. “I thought Sean had a solid year and he could have been on the first team if he played his first half of the season like he did the second half. Ray came on late this season at the plate.”
