Michigan tight end Devin Funchess named to Mackey Award watch list

ANN ARBOR — Michigan sophomore tight end Devin Funchess was named to the John Mackey Award watch list Tuesday for the best at his position.

Funchess caught early attention last year with five touchdowns — tied for the fourth-most ever by a U-M tight end — but most of his production came in the Air Force game Sept. 8, when he had four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Considering he finished the the season with 15 catches for 234 yards, that was a big day.

His first five catches of the season went for more than 20 yards, making him the team’s big play target early on.

His off-season goal was to gain weight so he could stay on the field for blocking plays as well.

He joined 36 other players (five from the Big Ten) on the Mackey list, which will be cut to semifinalists in November.

Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert won the award last season.

More awards: Michigan State junior Travis Jackson was one of 44 players named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation’s top center. Alabama’s Barrett Jones won the award last season. Michigan’s David Molk won in 2011.
