Roses and Thorns


…to area Lions Club members for their continuing work in bringing improved vision to people around the state, nation, and globe. Collecting and recycling eyeglasses as part of a club project, the Lions are helping thousands and thousands of people to recover at least a portion of their sight and better enjoy the world around them.

…to Isabella Bank, for investing in our community and opening a second branch on Maple Street, east of the river. Thank you.

…to all the organizers of the now annual National Night Out. The early evening activity gave hundreds of kids and their families a chance to better get to know law enforcement and emergency service personnel. The happening also gave older folks an opportunity to get acquainted with all sort of community services. A great event.

…to Big Rapids firefighter Bryan Marek, on being honored for his idea and work improving the ‘accountability’ for personnel on scene during emergency response operations carried out by the fire department. A simple, yet ever-so-effective idea put forward by an innovative thinker. Good show!


…to the despicable human beings who abuse the children of this community for their own prurient pleasure. They deserve a lot more than thorns, and they will receive their appropriate “reward” in the passage of time.
