GRAND RAPIDS — Regional textile artist Ann Loveless, known for her unique art quilts, has made it to the finals at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, the world’s biggest art competition.

Loveless entered her piece, “Sleeping Bear Dunes Lakeshore,” as one among 1,500 works of art displayed in a three-mile district of Grand Rapids. The quilt, a 20-foot, four-panel panoramic view of the Sleeping Bear Dunes Lakeshore, has been on display at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum since Sept. 18.

After several weeks, Loveless’ work was chosen, by popular vote, to be one of the top 10 pieces in the running for the top three positions and a chance to win up to $200,000.

“I am honored, excited and amazed,” she said. “I’ve been in ArtPrize three years, and I’ve been in the top 25 before, but not the top 10.”

Loveless said she thinks the size of her art has helped her secure a top 10 position.

“This is the biggest one I’ve done and I think the bigger a piece is, the more people see it,” she said.

“The crowds can get so big, I think some of the smaller pieces just get lost.”

She also said talking with people was just as important as the art itself.

“I spend about 10 hours per day at the museum, answering questions about my work,” she said. “It is almost like a campaign — connecting with people is almost as important as the actual piece. Most people want to know how long it took and if I have been here before.”

Loveless said people who have gone to Grand Rapids to register can now cast one vote for their favorite piece out of the top 10 until Thursday at midnight.

People who have visited the contest can vote online from home, but new voters must go to Grand Rapids to register to be able to vote for the top 10.
