Pentwater man dies in industrial accident

MASON COUNTY — A 37-year-old Pentwater man has died in an industrial accident aboard a barge being pulled by a tug boat.

The accident happened near Ludington on Lake Michigan. The barge was being towed by the tug boat named “Undaunted,” when it was asked to return to Ludington once the accident was reported.

The vessel was hauling ash from Muskegon and was headed for Charlevoix.

Witnesses and investigators on the scene say the man appeared to be conducting maintenance on a conveyor system when he became entangled in the machine.

The captain of the ship notified the U.S. Coast Guard and police. The accident is still under investigation.
