MOISD continues contract negotiations, renews MOTA contract

BIG RAPIDS — Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District is continuing negotiations on its teacher contracts.

The board of education went into closed session after a regular meeting on Monday to discuss the negotiations.

Also at the meeting, the board approved renewing the ISD’s contract with the Mecosta-Osceola Transit Authority for the third year. Under the agreement, the MOISD parks its buses at MOTA’s facility, and Mecosta-Osceola Personnel Co-op employees mechanics service the vehicles.

“We’re saving money, they’re saving money and our buses have never been in better shape,” said MOISD Superintendent Curt Finch. “It’s cool to have a cooperative agreement between a school and a county (organization).”

The board approved the dismissal of a paraprofessional who had been working in a resource room. The staff member initially was going to be laid off, but she left for another job first.

Special education director Kim Tufnell gave a presentation on a peer-to-peer mentoring pilot program set up with students at the MOISD Education Center and Big Rapids Middle School.
