Max Scherzer hopeful he won’t get traded by Detroit Tigers

DETROIT — Max Scherzer, you just won the American League Cy Young Award.

Where are you going?

Not Disney World, but the Tigers’ right-hander certainly will be a talking point during baseball’s winter meetings at a Disney World resort in Orlando next month.

Baseball insiders have said the Tigers will listen to offers for Scherzer, who is a year away from free agency and a lucrative multiyear contract.

But Scherzer talked with former GM Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio on Friday and said he doesn’t want to go anywhere.

“I don’t want to be traded,” Scherzer said. “I got a great thing going in Detroit, we have a great team. I hope they don’t mess with it. I want to be a Detroit Tiger and hopefully get back to the playoffs and try to do the ultimate goal and win something for the city of Detroit.”

He is represented by Scott Boras, who likes his clients to hit the open market as much as Miguel Cabrera likes to hit.

Scherzer said he and Boras have talked about an extension — “That we’re open to it” — but that no actual dialogue has been talked about with the Tigers.

The righty has been traded before, from Arizona to Detroit in 2009, and said that he knows all the rumors and rumblings are just part of the business.

“When you’ve been traded before in your career, you get the business side of the game,” he said. “You also get the payroll obligations that we have in Detroit. I get it. I get there’s an element where there’s a possibility of would it make sense for Detroit to trade me.”

Scherzer won the AL Cy Young on Wednesday in runaway fashion, receiving 28 of 30 first-place votes. He ranked among the top five in the league in all major statistical categories and said Friday that, while he likes Detroit, he’s just going to see how the business side of things works out.

“I realize I got a good thing going here in Detroit,” he said. “We got a great team. We got great guys around, I got great teammates around me. And then we got Miguel Cabrera. Who would want to leave and actually face that guy?”

Not Scherzer.
