EDUCATION: ‘Science rules!’ at Big Rapids High School

BIG RAPIDS — Sue McCullen’s Intensive Science class at Big Rapids High School recently demonstrated what Bill Nye was talking about when he said “science rules!”

In a lab appropriately entitled “An Alchemist’s Dream” and notably a favorite project of students nationwide, BRHS students in the class got to create “gold pennies” while learning about metallic bonds between two different metals.

After combining regular copper pennies with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and zinc and adding in a healthy dose of heat, a gorgeous creation of gold-looking pennies emerged. While the metals simply formed the alloy brass, the visually-stimulating transformation educated and excited the students.

The class focuses on a hands-on approach and engages in labs that are entertaining and enjoyable to students who are interested in science.
