BIG RAPIDS — With the ringing in of the new year, area residents may resolve to exercise more.

Well, lace up those tennis shoes and register for the St. Andrew’s Manna Pantry Promenade on Jan. 11.

According to event planners Helen Jones and Joanne Lemieux, proceeds will help fund the ongoing distribution of food to the needy in the area.

The Promenade, which will take place on the indoor track of Big Rapids High School, will kick off the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Manna Pantry. Originally, a small group of volunteers began providing food for those less fortunate in the hallway of the church. During those 25 years, the service has grown and now is located in the former two-stall garage of the church.

“We have gone from serving a handful of families each month to now offering food to over 100 families a month,” said Pantry Executive Director Isabel Kempton. “The need continues to grow.”

Registration for the event can be made in advance or when the doors open at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 11. The $15 registration fee includes a t-shirt and a soup and bread lunch. Children under 12 may walk for free, but a t-shirt and lunch still requires the $15 fee.

Forms are available at the pantry weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m., or at Chemical Bank and Martz and Shapley.

Forms returned by Jan. 3 will allow for the early pickup of shirts from 1 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 8 and 9 in the Parish Hall.
