BIG RAPIDS — Attendees at Friday’s Farmers Market may have noticed a gleaming red fire truck towering over the marketplace.

No, there wasn’t a fire; just the market’s annual Public Safety Day.

A Big Rapids Department of Public Safety fire truck and police squad car and Mecosta County Sheriff’s car all were displayed for curious onlookers to explore. The truck also featured free goodies for kids to take home, including plastic firefighter hats and water bottles filled with prizes.

“We like to come here with the trucks and answer people’s questions,” said firefighter Russ Bell. “We just explain what we do and how we do things.”
