MECOSTA — Saturday afternoons are usually reserved for doing something special.

For those who partake in the Saturday sporting-clay shoots at the Mecosta County Rod and Gun Club, there’s no better way to spend their weekend than with their special activity.

Randy Rice, president of the club, noted that sporting-clay shoots takes place every week.

“(Last Saturday) was the tournament,” Rice said. “We shoot year-round. We take December and January off pretty much.”

Shooters are outside regardless of temperatures. Some sportsmen clubs bring in trailers during cold weather.

“We stay out there in the elements,” Rice said. “This is about sporting clays. We get anywhere from 10 to 14. We had 16 (last Saturday).”

Also on Sept. 27, in the morning, the club sponsored a Red Bird shoot.

“It’s a trap shoot, and if you get a white bird and break it, you get a prize,” Rice said. “It’s always a lot of fun.”

The shoots on Saturday are open to the public.

“Some non-members show up and they usually become members after they’ve been here a time or two,” Rice said.

It’s the middle of hunting season right now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean more participants at the shoot.

“Normally, it’s about the same year-round,” Rice said. “Guys come out and they want to burn powder. It’s basically the camaraderie of it.”

Rice said some of the hunters at last Saturday’s shoot have had success goose hunting.

Larry Kelsh, club vice president, noted that the sporting clays shoot has been going on for 18 years.
