Children young and old turn out for Authorpalooza event

BIG RAPIDS — Saturday was about creating an enthusiasm for reading during the Big Rapids Community Library’s Authorpalooza event.

The event to coincide with the Friends of the Library Autumn Refresher, featured 18 authors from Michigan that were on hand to talk to residents and children about their books and future publishing endeavors.

“We wanted this event to focus on Michigan authors and the people writing in our area,” said Wendy Nystrom event coordinator. “We have a great turnout and people seem to be enjoying themselves.”

People who attended were able to interact with the authors and take a look at their books. Some enthusiastic readers were even able to pick up autographed copies from authors.

Young adult author J.R. Roper, of Grand Rapids, enjoyed the interaction with people.

“This is a cool event,” Roper said. “It’s focusing on Michigan authors and it gives readers a chance to meet writers in an informal, fun setting. We can share with them about our writing techniques and give them some background about the storyline.”

There also were door prizes, refreshments and children even got to make their own book, an activity that was put on by students in the Ferris State University Hospitality Management program.

“We wanted to do something where the kids could come and have the experience an author does when writing,” said Ferris State senior Jasmine Robinson.

Each child received writing materials and a colored, apple-shaped book filled with blank pages waiting to be filled with a story.

“The activity will give the kids a piece of something that they created and can take with them,” said Ferris State senior Adrienne Prout. “They are making their own book. Something they can share with family and friends.”

The event was sponsored by Friends of the Big Rapids Community Library, Y102 Morning Show, Ferris State University Hospitality Program, Ice Mountain, Meijer and Patterson’s Flowers.
