OSCEOLA COUNTY — Last minute donations are still being accepted for the annual Gifts for Kids event.

Gifts for Kids is an annual event hosted by Mecosta Osceola County Department of Humans Services and Love Inc. of Osceola County that provides Osceola County families in need with presents for the holidays, which partners with area churches and food pantries.

“It’s a terrific program that is completely funded by members of the community,” said John Klever, community resource coordinator for DHS in Mecosta and Osceola counties.

The distribution event will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Evart Middle School. It is available only to those who have signed up for the program. This year, 227 families have registered, according to Klever.

During that time, families will be able to visit tables determined by age group and choose one gift per child. Board games, socks and underwear, and a table of free items will be available to each participant.

Toys and other items suited for children have been pouring in.

“I think it speaks to the communities that things aren’t necessarily good, but people are still willing to donate,” Klever said.

The Evart Public Library is one of the drop-off points for the drive. Toys for all ages surround the tree in the library’s lobby. The location will accept unwrapped gifts through Thursday, Dec. 11. Donations also can be dropped off before Friday, Dec. 12, at the DHS office, located at 14330 Northland Drive in Big Rapids.
