Coyotes pull away late for 62-50 victory

HOWARD CITY — Reed City made it a 2-0 sweep over the Tri County Vikings this season.

Andre Jones scored 18 points, while Chris Barton had 13 and Mykel Dillard had 11 to lead the Coyotes to a 62-50 Central State Activities Association (CSAA) Gold Division boys basketball game Friday.

The Coyotes won at home over the Vikings earlier this season.

“Chad’s done a great job with those guys,” Reed City coach Dean McGuire said of Tri County skipper Chad Gould. “That’s not the same team we saw back in December.”

The Coyotes built a 35-27 halftime lead.

Nolan Patterson left the game late in the second quarter with an apparent leg injury, and did not return.

Jones had five points, including his fourth 3-pointer of the game to keep Reed City in front 40-34 midway in the third.

Turnovers and foul trouble started to hurt the Coyotes in the third.

Schrader hit a triple late in the third to cut the Reed City lead to 44-41 going into the fourth. He had 18 points.

It was anyone’s game in the final quarter. Dillard’s two free throws at 4:59 made it 52-45 for the Coyotes. Barton scored moments later for a nine-point advantage.

“We got a few stops ,which always helps,” McGuire said. “They’re very active in their zone. We had a hard time against it at times.”

The Vikings started fouling the Coyotes in the final minute of action. Tri County couldn’t make its shots and missed five straight attempts on one possession.

“It was execution and being able to bounce back,” Barton said.

The Coyotes, 5-6 overall and 4-3 in the league, host Morley Stanwood on Tuesday.
