HISTORY: A part of history is on display for community members at Artworks in Big Rapids. “Welcome to Idlewild: The Black Eden of Michigan,” is available until Feb. 28. The exhibit at Artworks features photographic banners, an Idlewild history quilt and a picture display owned by John Meeks, head of Idlewild African American Chamber of Commerce. Idlewild is located in northwestern Michigan and holds a special place in the nation’s segregated history. From 1912 to the mid 1960s, Idlewild was one of only a few resorts in the country for African Americans. It was a place well-known entertainers and professionals would visit to enjoy camping, swimming, boating, fishing and more.  Future Idlewild events include a music fest from July 10 through the 12 and a homecoming event on Aug. 1.
