BIG RAPIDS — Laughter and music echoed through the halls of the Big Rapids High School while two musicians came together to create more than just a concert, but a musical comedy show.

On Saturday, Heywood Banks, comedian and singer of humorous songs, teamed up with Ed Mallett, Tuba Bach founder, to perform for the community as part of the 10-year anniversary season of Tuba Bach.

Mallett founded Tuba Bach as a way to bring world-class performers to Big Rapids.

“Tuba Bach concerts are an opportunity for people to see performers they normally would have to go to New York or Chicago for,” Mallett said.

Mallett first performed with Banks in 2010. From then on they were more than musical performers together, but friends.

According to Mallett, those who like Heywood tend to be a different audience than those who typically come to Tuba Bach concerts. Heywood is invited to broaden the audience spectrum.

“Heywood is such a riot to work with,” Mallett said. “I never know what to expect with him and it’s fun to see what he will do next. He is fun to play with and work with, but he is also a good friend.”

Heywood has performed for many different groups and is a frequent guest on the national Bob and Tom radio show.

“Ed talked me into playing tonight. He is very charismatic,” Heywood laughed. “I really enjoy playing. I’m really lucky that I have managed to turn music and comedy into a living because it is a difficult thing to do.”
