Cardinals go 1-1 at Cadillac Invite

CADILLAC — The Cardinals won the semifinal 17-8 against Cadillac and lost 6-2 to Pine River in the finals Saturday.

Big Rapids’ Tim Folkema and Tim Thebo each had four hits against Cadillac, while Keenan McIntyre earned the win. Dakota Sanders had three hits in the opener and two more in the nightcap. Fulkema and Thebo also had two hits in the championship.

The Cardinals (2-6) play at Pine River on Tuesday.

Mohawk Classic

MORLEY – The Mohawks went 1-1 Saturday, winning 7-6 in eight innings against Reed City and losing 9-8 in six innings against Traverse City West.

Lucas Elenbaas had two hits and three RBIs against West and had two hits against the Coyotes. Nic Huntey hit a walk-off single against Reed City, while Austin Kozlowski recorded three hits. Tom Carey has three hits, including two doubles against West.


Mohawk Classic

MORLEY — Morley Stanwood finished 2-1 at its home tournament Saturday. The Mohawks lost Game 1 to Chippewa Hills 6-11 before beating Manistee 6-5 in eight innings and Central Lake 7-6.

Against the Warriors, Mekayla Carey hit two homeruns. Mallory Raven also hit a homerun.

In Game 2, Raven went 5 for 5 at the plate against the Chippewas.

Against Central Lake, Carey finished with three hits, including a double and a triple.

The Mohawks (6-3) host Hespiria at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.


Detroit Tigers 2, New York Yankees 1

DETROIT — J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes each singled in a run in the seventh inning to give the Tigers the lead and Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth inning to close it out.

Alfredo Simon allowed one run on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to earn his third win of the season. He struck out seven.

The Tigers (11-2) play Game 2 of a four-game series at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
