MSU Extension hosts ‘Cooking Matters at the Store’

BIG RAPIDS — Sometimes shopping healthy isn’t always the cheapest way to have enough food for the week.

Michigan State University Extension is hosting a free guided tour at Meijer and lesson on shopping healthy on a budget.

The tour takes place from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 25 and again on Wednesday, July 15 at Meijer, located at 15400 Waldron Way. Everyone will meet at the pharmacy in the cafe.

For the tour, participants will practice skills such as buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices to find bargains, reading and comparing food labels, identifying whole grains and sticking to a budget.

After the tour, participants will receive $10 worth of free healthy groceries of their choice using the skills learned on the tour, a free book full of tasty recipes and simple tips on buying healthy, low-cost foods and a reusable grocery bag.
