BIG RAPIDS ㅡ Artworks has provided cultural enrichment to Big Rapids for 15 years and now, the organization is evolving to accommodate even more art and culture.

The Artworks gallery and Painted Turtle Gift Shop are relocating to the open retail space next door at 104 N Michigan Ave. The 5,000 square-foot storefront was formerly occupied by Natural Beauty Salon and Day Spa.

Artworks owns the entire facility and had rented to Natural Beauty until its move in November. Once settled into their new space, Artworks will rent their old gift shop and upstairs gallery locations to other businesses. Artworks Executive Director Lynne Scheible explained the new home for Artworks will be more adaptable, marketable and accessible.

“The current space is confusing to some people because they don’t know where to go,” she said. “This space offers so much more for the arts. It’s a very exciting time for Artworks.”

Scheible also said the larger floor space will provide more opportunities for music and theatre performances.

Tessa McNally, manager of the Painted Turtle Gift Shop, said she is excited for the new location to take in a variety of artistic mediums.

“Bringing the gallery and gift shop into one area makes Artworks one big experience. Artworks will have the potential to host anything that can be read, sung or painted,” McNally said.

Artworks is a community-funded nonprofit organization and Scheible feels the move will be a good investment in arts programming for Big Rapids.

“We want to be good stewards of the dollars that we’re being trusted with,” she said.

Artworks is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and Scheible added the move feels like a birthday present for Artworks.

The current Artworks facility will close on Saturday, June 27 and Scheible hopes to have the new gallery and gift shop open by Wednesday, July 1.
