City of Big Rapids installs new detectable ramps in sidewalk

street workSIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT: City of Big Rapids work crews were on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Maple Street early Thursday morning removing the old concrete under the detectable ramp on the sidewalk. The detectable ramp is the dimpled section of sidewalk just before pedestrians step into the crosswalk and is designed to give the visually impaired a tactile warning they are approaching the curb. The new ramps will be made of steel in hopes they will better withstand the salt and freezing temperatures in wintertime.
