Pioneer goes everywhere: Dr. James Scott

Pio everywhere Dr. James ScottGALAPAGOS ISLANDS: Dr. James Scott and his son, Joshua, recently traveled to the Galapagos Islands. They were part of a team of veterinarians from the United States and Japan who worked with the government of Ecuador on conservation efforts to save the endangered subspecies of the Galapagos Tortoise found on several of the islands in the Galapagos Archipelago. In spite of recent conservation efforts, the Galapagos Tortoise has been having a difficult time recovering from being driven to near extinction. The most recent efforts have included the eradication of exotic species such as feral cats and goats from many of the islands. These exotic species have driven the numbers of tortoise down by predation and competition for limited food supplies. Dr. Scott’s responsibilities on the islands included evaluation of population health and collection of DNA. During their time on the islands, he and his son were able to explore and see most of the plants and animals that are native to the Galapagos. They also took many pictures along the way.
