MORLEY — Doug Beemer says he has shot several deer during his lifetime.

But it’s unlikely he’ll ever forget the one he shot on Oct. 20 east of Morley, using a crossbow

Beemer was hunting around 7 p.m. when he shot a 10-point buck with 18 1/2-inch rack span.

“This one’s a lot bigger,” he said. “I’ve never seen one this big.”

That’s saying something considering Beemer has been hunting 40 years. When he first saw the deer while hunting, Beemer wasn’t totally surprised.

“I had caught him on the trail camera,” Beemer said. “I’ve never seen him in person. I saw him, was using a crossbow, and he was about 55 yards away. He was just about to go behind some brush. I shot and tracked him and got him.”

After being shot, the deer went about a half-mile and then dropped. For awhile, Beemer was fearful he might not find the buck.

“He was bleeding really heavy,” Beemer said.

He hit the buck behind the front shoulder.

“This was only the second time I was out,” he said. “I haven’t seen any other bucks while I was hunting.”

Based on what he experienced, Beemer thinks hunters will see quite a few deer in upcoming weeks. Beemer also firearm hunts and has high hopes for another buck next month.
