MORLEY — Morley Stanwood fired out to a 16-2 advantage and rolled to a 65-47 nonleague girls basketball win over Pine River on Monday night.

Mallory Raven and Shannan Thompson led the Mohawks (2-0) with 17 points apiece. Julie Justin had 19 points for Pine River (0-2).

Mikayla Thumser had three 3-pointers for the Mohawks in the first half and wound up with 11 points.

“We got off to a good start and we set the tone early,” Morley Stanwood coach Bob Raven said. “I thought our full-court pressure bothered them. We played at a quick pace. It was good to get off to a good start.”

The Mohawks built an early 16-2 lead. Justin hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter to help the Bucks cut their deficit to 18-11 going into the second quarter.

But the Mohawks, with some effective offensive rebounding, took control again with a 10-2 advantage to open the second quarter. Raven drove for a layup and a 36-20 lead late in the first half.

It was 39-21 at halftime. Raven and Thompson both had 10 first-half points for the visitors.

“I think getting right out and running to a six-point lead to start the game was really nice,” Mallory said. “Then we kept pushing. We had a fast pace which led to some turnovers.”

Raven scored to open the second half for a 41-21 lead and Brooke Huested added a basket moments
later for a 45-21 advantage. Justin hit two free throws with 3:26 left in the third and it was 49-27.

Marissa Frye had a cutback at the end of the third quarter for a 52-29 lead.

“The second half, I thought we got a little sloppy and turned the ball over too much,” Bob said. “We have to take care of the ball if we’re going to be a good team.”

Logan Powell had a 3-pointer for Pine River to open the fourth. Raven’s two free throws moments later gave the Mohawks a 22-point lead and Huested followed with a putback for a 56-34 advantage.

“I have a veteran group,” Bob said. “I have a lot of seniors and a lot of leadership. You can’t use the excuse that we don’t know what we’re doing. We’ve been around for a while.”

Thompson had 10 rebounds and eight steals, while Raven added six rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Huested had five rebounds.

“Against Beal City (in the season opener), we didn’t have such a good start, so we worked on that in this game,” Mallory said.

Morley Stanwood plays White Cloud at home on Friday to open the Central State Activities Association Silver Division season.

Pine River is home Dec. 15 against Beal City to open the Highland Conference season.
