Another great week at the fair

What began with a flurry of activity more than a week ago, ended Sunday with another flurry of activity.

In between time, there were a lot of flurries of activity — each hard on the tail of the previous.

The 2016 Mecosta County Agricultural Free Fair was one big happening after the other, with each judging and competition flowing almost seamlessly into the next and little time to catch your breath.

For young 4-H’ers, club leaders, and 4-H and fairground organizers, this week was the culmination of a lot of hard work, dedication and planning.

For those visiting the fairgrounds, the week offered a chance to see a lot of young people and adults doing good things together, and also to enjoy the excitement of the midway with its rides and games.

This past week, the fair gave everyone attending, whether as a participant of a spectator, the best show in town. From the livestock barns to the exhibit building and the midway to the grandstand, there was something for everyone.

And throughout the day there always was time to stop for a Polish dog or ice cream, and visit the Rotary booth for some great chicken.

Of course, there also was an unhealthy dose of elephant ears to be had, too. Where else can you get fair food but at the fair?

The weather was generally great, and spirits were high.

And then, it came to a close.

Now is the time to offer a few words of thanks to those involved with making this seminal summer event something to be looked forward to year, after year, after year.

From the animal judging arenas, to the ever-popular midway, to the grandstand, there really is something for everyone — all in the best traditions of county fairs and festivals.

A sincere and grateful nod to members of the fair board who give so much of themselves in laboring long and hard to bring to the fair to fruition. There is a lot to do, and fair board members do it well and have once again turned out a great event that will certainly be the stuff of fond memories for years to come.

Thanks too to the Mecosta County 4-H organization — organizers, club leaders, dedicated parents and especially club members from around the county.

The 4-H kids at the fair always demonstrate the best there is in our young people today. They are gravel-road kids showing a paved-road world what life is all about. The excellent attitude of kids at the Mecosta County fair will certainly be carried into the larger world as they head off and go to places no one could imagine.

Thanks to the fair board.

Thanks to the 4-H’ers.

The 2016 fair was great fun, and filled with lessons for all of us.

See you next year.
