JIM CREES: I hope I make the cut

CREES MUGThis time around…I’m hopeful.

I might get on a list. Let me explain.

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has a HUGE problem with the media.

That’s me!

Trump kinda liked “the media” at the start of this election cycle. Then, “the media” started asking questions and accurately reporting on him. The romance petered out quickly.

He claims he’s getting the short end of the media reporting stick, and “the media” prefers Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Clinton has had a tough time of things with “the media” but Trump’s supporters don’t admit or even recognize this fact.

Folks around this area say (pointedly and caustically) I never say anything bad about Clinton.

C’mon!!! Gimme a break!

From the get-go I’ve written time, and time, and time again I would rather have just about any Democrat running for the presidency than Sen. Clinton.

For example: “I don’t look forward to a Clinton campaign simply because I think we have had just about enough Clinton for a decade or so…”

And I have suggested time and time again Sen. Clinton was not overly familiar with The Truth.

Still, folks think “the media’ (read: me) are giving poor Donald an unfair reaming. Trump himself is quite distraught.

“If the disgusting and corrupt media covered me honestly and didn’t put false meaning into the words I say, I would be beating Hillary by 20%” he tweeted.

Not to worry, though. Trump promised a full-scale response attack on the free press when he promised after the election he was “gonna open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money.”

Trump is a guy who knows about suing and law suits. A USA TODAY article by reporter Kelly Jordan noted recently “Our project found about 3,500 legal actions involving Trump, including 1,900 where he or his companies were a plaintiff and about 1,300 in which he was the defendant.”

Trump threatens critical reporters with withdrawing press credentials. He insults reporters covering his campaign openly and in public forums in which they are then assaulted by members of the audience.

“The press should be ashamed of themselves,” he said later to the audience without offering examples. “The political press is among the most dishonest people that I’ve ever met. The press is so dishonest and so unfair.”

When the Politico group publicized research which found that over 90 percent of what Trump said was false, he responded saying the news site was “one of the most dishonest organizations I’ve ever dealt with.”

THEY are dishonest because they revealed that HE is a liar.

Trump says he’s going to severely limit the press. There are reports he is already creating an “Enemies List.”

So here is my plea – Please put me on the list!

When an investigation years ago revealed the existence of President Richard Nixon’s enemies list, there were a lot of interesting names on the record. Mine wasn’t amongst them.

Nixon’s list actually included some 576 names. The Top 20 included:

UAW president Leonard Woodcock; Edwin O. Guthman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and university professor; newsman Dan Schorr; and even Paul Newman.

I would have loved to be on that list.

Some time back, while perusing the NRA’s website I discovered they too (at the time) maintained a list of people and organizations they believe were hostile to their cause.

Sadly, I wasn’t on that list either.

There were 20 pages (!) naming individuals and organizations who the NRA considers …unsupportive. Lots of medical people and groups. Lots and lots of churches and church organizations. Lots of …just folks.

The list began with the AARP, and included the American Federation of Teachers, and, oddly enough, the American Firearms Association.

Also on the NRA’s “Enemies List” are the Friends Committee on National Legislation which isn’t all that surprising. They are, after all, Quakers.

Then there is the General Board of the United Methodist Church, and the United Church of Christ.

They all made the list. I didn’t

The NRA list included Tony Bennett. TONY BENNETT!!!

There are lots and lots of journalists on the list. I’m wasn’t one of them.

I really would like to be on someone’s Enemies List.

I’m pretty outspoken.

I missed out on being named on the other lists. I’m pretty sure there are enough folks around here who would be more than willing to suggest my name to organizers at the Trump campaign.

I understand I’m a pretty small fish, but anything anyone can do to get me on Trump’s enemies list will be most appreciated.
