BIG RAPIDS — Paul Cole has enjoyed plenty of success bow hunting in previous seasons.

Mark 2016 down as another successful year.

The Big Rapids resident bagged an eight-point buck with 18-inch rack span while hunting Sunday in the Haymarsh area.

“It was a good spot where it’s swamp-like and there’s some acorns,” Cole said. “It was a good night because they like that kind of a rainy deal. He was following a button buck. The button buck went through and he was on his track. I watched him for awhile. He got into my shooting range.”

But it was so warm out, and Cole’s glasses fogged up.

“I had to grunt at him to make it stop,” Cole said. “Then I cleared my glasses a little bit. I shot him and shot it a little higher than I wanted to. He went about 150 yards. It was tough. The grass was wet. But I got him.”

Cole was about 25 yards from the buck when he shot him.

“They can really take a hit,” Cole said. “It’s a good-sized deer. I hit him in the high lung area, not exactly where I wanted to.”

When it comes to having success bow hunting, “everything has to be just right,” Cole said. “You have to make your move at the right time. You have to have patience. I couldn’t have any type of movement until it was my time to move. I’d like to go out again and try to beat this record. I know there’s some big ones out there. There’s some good scrapes on trees.”

This was Cole’s second biggest buck. He shot a 9-point with 20-inch spread in 2012 with a bow.

“There’s a lot of acorns this year,” Cole said. “They love those acorns. It’s like candy to them.”
