Dragons use strong first half to defeat Bulldogs 67-54

BIG RAPIDS — Tiffin fired out to too big of a start for Ferris State to recover from and handed the Bulldogs a 67-54 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball loss on Monday at Wink Arena.

The Dragons fired out to a 27-16 lead after the first quarter and it was 39-28 at halftime. The visitors led 49-42 after the third quarter and outscored FSU 18-12 in the fourth.

“Tiffin beat us on the boards,” FSU coach Kendra Faustin said. “I was disappointed in that. This was a game right before Christmas and everyone is going home. We have all these freshmen and new players. I don’t know if we were as focused as I’d like to see.”

Tiffin shot 23-of-58 from the floor for 39.7 percent and 12-of-29 for 41.4 percent.

“It was a hard fought game for both teams,” freshman guard Riley Blair said. “They came out shooting the ball well. We couldn’t find our groove offensively. We had some players that really stepped up. We need to work on getting more shots for our players. We’re going to work hard over Christmas break.”

Leah Humes was 8-of-14 from the floor and had 18 points for Ferris (2-8, 2-3) while Rachel McInerney added 11 points and 10 rebounds, plus four blocks.

Kristen Massey had 13 points and four rebounds to lead Tiffin (3-6, 1-4).

“We just need more consistency,” McInerney said. “That’s what we’re lacking right now.”

Ferris plays at Salem International on Jan. 2.

“We don’t focus on wins and  losses, I want us to play our best and do our best,” Faustin said. “For us to do that, we have to take care of the basketball and we have to rebound. That’s important.”
