BIG RAPIDS — Jackob Martinson is among two sophomores on the undefeated Big Rapids boys basketball team, but is being looked upon to make some key contributions.

He’s started all but one game for the Cardinals.

“It’s going very good,” he said, adding that varsity basketball, “is a new fit. It’s always hard to adjust. But I feel that I’m getting there. You’re playing bigger guys and it’s faster, a lot faster pace.”

Dorian Martin is the other sophomore.

Martinson is 6-foot-4.

“I’m there to get buckets, get in and do whatever I can,” he said. “I’d say I’m doing well.”

“We’re playing some sophomores,” Big Rapids coach Kent Ingles said,”They’re stepping in with some pretty good players. We’re pretty hard on both of them. But they’re both going to be very good players for us.”

Big Rapids, 6-0, is scheduled to play Tuesday, weather permitting, at Reed City in Central State Activities Association Gold Division action, as the Cardinals bid to stay undefeated.

“Demetri (Martin) is a big part of it,” Martinson said. “We didn’t have a great start (Friday night). We have to get a much better start.”

“Jake has unlimited potential, he really does,” Ingles said. “He has to do it on the court.”

In Friday’s 86-58 win over Central Montcalm, Martinson scored seven points in one of his better games of the season.

“It was good both ways,” he said. “I can work on my defense more.”

Big Rapids is home against Chippewa Hills on Friday.

Big Rapids hockey

Big Rapids’ hockey team lost both road games 5-1 Friday and Saturday at Traverse City against Utica Eisenhower and Marquette.  James Hundersmarck scored Friday and Tommy Crandell scored Saturday.

“We played well in spurts, but not consistent enough against two very good Division 2 schools,” Big Rapids coach Tim Blashill said.

Big Rapids is at East Grand Rapids on Friday and home with Traverse City Central on Saturday.
