BIG RAPIDS — It took just 10 people, 19 seconds and a rope for the Big Rapids Charter Township Firefighters Association to pull its 56,000 pound Rescue Engine 1 fire truck 50 feet.

The Special Olympics Michigan Area 5 and Big Rapids Charter Township Firefighters Association participated in the first annual fire truck pull fundraiser on Saturday at the Mecosta County Agricultural Free Fair.

The event put the strength of the two teams to the test by timing how quickly they could pull the fire truck the distance.

“Participants and the public benefited from the event because people see the Special Olympics athletes have fun and do sports just like anyone else,” said Kim Chapman, assistant area director of Special Olympics.

The Big Rapids Township Fire Department clocked in at about 19 seconds while the Special Olympics Area 5 teamed pulled in at about 30 seconds.

All proceeds benefit the Area 5 Special Olympics, which works with athletes from Mecosta and Osceola counties. The money raised will go toward the year-round sports program, which is funded by donations and fundraising.

“It was actually a lot of fun. We were hoping for more teams, but it’s the first year so it’ll get better the longer we have it,” said Jim Tubbs, chief of the Big Rapids Township Fire Department. “It was nice to interact with the Special Olympics athletes and cheer them on as they pulled as well.”
