LEROY — Among the objectives for Pine River’s softball team in the LAT League this summer has been to find a pitcher, who can take over for the graduated Alexis Bennett.

It won’t be easy.

Bennett had two no-hitters and three one-hitters, plus 15 games with three hits or less.

“She only gave up 13 extra base hits all season,” Pine River coach Laura Mumby said. “Yes, she had too many walks, but 13-6 is a good record, and 217 Ks is impressive with only 62 hits given up.”

Bennett threw a one-hitter in the predistricts.

She pitched four years and was on Marion for the first two seasons.

“This is my best year,” Bennett said, indicating the 1-0 loss to Hart may have been one of her best pitching assignments. “I was throwing hard. You don’t have to think about it. I was throwing it harder this year and had a good selection. I got a new pitch and used it a lot. I got better each year.”

She batted .386.

“I had my ups and downs,” Bennett said.

A triple against Lake City was a highlight.

Bennett usually had strong performances during Pine River’s summer LAT League at the Bristol diamonds. The games continue through the end of this month.
