BIG RAPIDS – From old time classics to polkas, Strings and Things will take over the stage Friday with their diverse music sounds.

The band will perform from noon to 2 p.m. in the Pocket Park music series.

“Pocket Park is a fun-loving, fast-moving performance,” said Sandra Jones, a fiddler in the band. “We play some waltzes, but most of our music is upbeat. We usually have a good audience with a lot of people we know there.”

Strings and Things has been around for more than a decade, and performed at Pocket Park almost every year since the event began.

The band is made up of “just friends that got together,” Jones said. Many members play hammer dulcimers, but the band also has guitar players, drummers and solo singers.

Strings and Things performs songs such as “Whiskey Before Dinner,” “Tick-Tock Polka” and “Red River Valley.”

“We got the solo singers about three years ago. Before it was just instrumental,” Jones, of Big Rapids, said. “Now they come, sing and do a good job. They just want to spread their wings.”

Jones owns the music building the band practices in, and has traveled with the Original Michigan Fiddlers Association for more than 20 years.

“My favorite part of performing is just being with the group. They’re a good bunch of people to work with and be around,” she said. “I also like making people happy. People are always happy when they listen to music.”
