Contemporary Christian mixes with classic rock at Pocket Park

BIG RAPIDS — The sounds of contemporary Christian music will mix with classic rock at Friday’s Pocket Park music series event.

Dave Yonker has written more than 60 original Christian songs, and performs secular covers such as “Born in the USA” and “Taking Care of Business.”

Yonker will perform from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, in the Pocket Park music series.

“Pocket Park is neat because you have all the food and activities across the street happening, and there’s the atmosphere of people just taking it all in and enjoying good music,” he said. “You get people coming and going, and I’ve always enjoyed it.”

Yonker first picked up the guitar when he was 35 after a youth pastor wanted to create a praise band. He’d never played before, but it launched his motivation to continue learning. He began writing his own music in 2007.

“Being a Christian myself, it got me focused on that genre of music,” he said. “I do add more secular songs to performances. I grew up as a classic rock fan, but all the music I’ve written is contemporary Christian music. That’s where God brought me.”

Since then, he has released two albums. During live solo performances, Yonker has backtracks he plays from his computer to add the sound of a band.

“Watching people’s reactions during a performance and seeing them respond to what you’re doing is my favorite part,” Yonker said. “It makes you enjoy it so much more. Seeing them interact is so much fun.
