BIG RAPIDS — More than two weeks of fun are planned for incoming freshman and returning Ferris State University students during the Bulldog Beginnings event, including Big Rapids Beginnings set for Saturday, Aug, 26.

The fun begins on move-in day, Friday, Aug. 25, with a Bulldog Welcome at 7:30 p.m. on Top Taggart Field and will continue with a showing of “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” at 9:30 p.m. on the South Quad. According to Ferris’ list of events, students are advised to bring a tarp or towel to sit on and a light jacket or sweater to wear.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, Big Rapids Beginnings kicks-off with sidewalk sales, putt putt golf, a Ferris wheel, bounce houses and more in the downtown area, and free hot dogs, chips and beverages can be found at the Elks Lodge No. 974.

“This is a welcome party for incoming students,” said event chairman and coordinator Rex Schuberg. “This year, we decided to pair this with sidewalk sales and a carnival atmosphere for the students and the community.”

The 100 and 200 blocks of South Michigan Avenue will be closed for the event, which also will include a peanut butter and jelly drive, hosted by Angels of Action; a kids’ safety day tent, hosted by the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety; an open microphone in front of Quinn’s Music; and many other activities.

Schuberg said the Big Rapids Beginnings was made possible through the hard work of community members, such as Rick Swinson, Jon Coles, Connie Koepke, Nick Smith, Kevin Carmody, Steve Masters, Randy Ostrander and Brynn Chesebro.

“I think this event shows that we have a community that cares and appreciates Ferris State University students,” Schuberg said.

Also beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, students can participate in Playlists and Popsicles on the North Quad, during which time they can play games, enjoy music and become familiar with Panhellenic, Infraternity Council and Black Greek Council.

Events continue with #BulldogReady set for 2 to 5 p.m. at the campus Barnes and Nobles bookstore, and Dine with Professors starting at 5 p.m. at The Rock Cafe.

On Monday, “first impression” stations will be set up around campus, helping direct new students and staff to academic buildings, dining halls and facilities. Festivities continue through Sept. 9, ending with the EU Comedy Competition at 7 p.m. at the Rankin Lounge of the University Center.
