Friday’s sports in brief


Big Rapids 35, Central Montcalm 8

STANTON — Dorian Martin ran for three touchdowns and Big Rapids scored a Central State Activities Association Gold Division win over Central Montcalm on Friday.

Martin had a 1-yard run for six points in the first quarter, another for 14 yards in the second and his third for 47 yards in the third quarter. Connor Vennix booted all three extra points for a 21-0 lead.

Also in the third, Jayden Mason had a 15-yard quarterback scramble for a touchdown. Vennix’s kick made it 28-0.

Central Montcalm scored with 1:13 to go on a 3-yard touchdown run in the third for Central. Blake Ryan’s run made it 28-8. Vennix had a 10-yard run in the fourth and kicked the PAT.

Mason led Big Rapids in rushing with 71 yards, followed by Martin with 68, Jaiven Holmes-Powell with 52 and Aaron Repke and Deion Jones with 43 apiece.

Repke passed for 51 yards. Jackob Martinson caught two passes for 36 yards and Braeden Childress caught two for 22 yards.

Big Rapids had a 390-160 edge in total yards.

Defensively, Adam Bollman had 14 tackles while Elliott Blair had 10 and Dylan Yeager had 10.

Big Rapids (3-3, 3-2) is home Friday against Reed City.

Kent City 28, Morley Stanwood 0

KENT CITY — In a battle for first-place in the CSAA’s Silver Division between two undefeated teams, Kent City (6-0, 4-0) prevailed over Morley Stanwood (5-1, 3-1) on Friday.

Morley Stanwood trailed 21-0 at halftime. The Mohawks overall had 143 total yards of offense.

The Mohawks return home Friday to play White Cloud in the final CSAA game of the season.

Lake City 34 Pine River 15

LAKE CITY — Pine River (0-6, 0-5) dropped its Homecoming game to undefeated Lake City (6-0, 4-0) on Friday.

Lake City led 26-7 at halftime.

Brock Nelson had a 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Elijah Lewis had a 37-yard run in the fourth.

Nelson rushed for 66 yards while Luke Hill carried for 64 yards and Lewis had 58.

Pine River plays at Manton on Friday.


Mesick 58, Crossroads 0

BIG RAPIDS — Mesick (3-3, 3-1) was up 40-0 after the first quarter and 48-0 at halftime en route to Friday’s West Michigan D League victory on Crossroads’ homecoming.

Crossroads (0-6, 0-4) plays at Baldwin on Friday.

Marion 64, Baldwin 0

MARION — The West Michigan D League’s first-place team, Marion (5-1. 5-0) was too much for Baldwin (1-5, 0-4) in Friday’s contest.

Baldwin has its Homecoming on Friday against Crossroads.
