Northern Michigan defeats Ferris State hockey team

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan’s hockey team has had Ferris State’s number this season.

The Wildcats made it 3-0 against Ferris so far this season with a 6-1

Western Collegiate Hockey Association win on Friday.

Northern Michigan, which swept Ferris in Big Rapids during an October series, is now 9-8-2 overall and 7-4-2-2 in the WCHA while Ferris fell to 9-11-1 and 6-6-1.

Robbie Payne scored in the first period for a 1-0 Northern lead. Adam Rockwood scored early in the second for a 2-0 advantage.

Andrew Dorantes scored on the power play 3:48 into the second period for Ferris’ only goal.

Jordan Kliemel scored the next two goals, including one on a power play for the Wildcats and a 4-1 lead.

Payne and Phillip Beaulieu scored in the third period for Northern Michigan.

Ferris’ Darren Smith had 21 saves and allowed three goals while Justin Kapelmaster had 10 saves and also allowed three goals.

The two teams play again on Saturday in Northern.
