MORLEY — Landon Elenbaas and his Morley Stanwood basketball teammates had Tuesday off this week, but the Mohawks are focusing on a Central State Activities Association Silver Division showdown at Kent City on Friday.

The Mohawks are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Elenbaas has been among the key contributors on the team. The most recent game was a 64-21 win over Holton.

“We played hard, played well and moved the ball good,” Elenbaas said. “We assisted good and I thought we rebounded well too.”

In the previous game, the Mohawks suffered their first loss of the season, 47-42 to nonleague foe Central Montcalm.

“We knew we were better than them and should have beaten them,” Elenbaas said. “We didn’t play our best ball.”

It’s Elenbaas’ first year on varsity.

“The first couple of games, the shooting wasn’t great, but I’m getting there,” he said. “Speed and physicality is so different. They want me to shoot when I’m open, and drive.”

Shooting, including threes, is a potential Elenbaas strength.

“Confidence, is critical in 3-point shooting,” he said.

The key to getting a win over Kent City is very clear.

“It was the same thing is what we did (against Holton),” Elenbaas said. “We have to keep the intensity high.”
