Ferris women defeat Northern Michigan

Alexis Bush gets set to make a play.

BIG RAPIDS — The best way to come off a heartbreaking loss is with a hard-earned win.

Ferris State’s women’s basketball team (9-8, 3-6) shook off a tough 80-77 loss two days earlier against league power Michigan Tech with a 62-52 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Wink Arena over Northern Michigan University (8-9, 4-5) on Saturday.

“I was really proud of our defensive effort,” Ferris coach Kendra Faustin said. “I thought we really had to battle. We had to rotate a lot. They’re a big team and talented in the post. They kept up moving all night. Our posts battled and our guards did a great job rotating on the perimeter. I’m proud of the way we came back from Thursday.”

Rachel McInerney had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Ferris, followed by Lilly George with 18 points and four boards.

“We played really hard the whole game (on Thursday),” George said. “We came up short but we played so well.”

The Bulldogs fired out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter. Alexis Bush scored late in the quarter for the 10-point lead.

Abby Nakfoor’s layup gave Ferris a 21-13 lead with 2:31 left in the quarter. She netted a 3-pointer late in the half for a 25-17 margin.

Leah Humes scored off her own steal for a 29-21 Ferris lead early in the third. George’s reverse side layup made it 35-26. McInerney’s baseliner made it 37-26 at 4:04. George hit two straight for a 41-31 lead at 2:50. Her 3-pointer at 2:25 made it 44-34.

Ferris plays Thursday at Purdue Northwest.

It was 48-37 after three quarters.

Shaniya Higgins opened the fourth for Ferris with a layup off her own steal. George’s 3-point play made it 53-40 at 9:10. Bush hit a 3-pointer at 6:10 for a 56-43 lead.

“Their posts are big, 6-4 each,” Faustin said. “Lilly stepped up and shot the ball well. She took a huge step forward.”

McInerney scored at 1:10 for a 60-49 advantage.
